Sgian Dubhs
The sgian-dubh (pronounced skean dhu) is a small, singled-edged knife worn as part of traditional Scottish Highland dress along with the kilt. It is worn tucked into the top of the kilt hose with only the upper portion of the hilt visible.
The origins of the sgian dubh are believed to trace back to Highland custom where any hidden knives had to be revealed to the host when entering a house. Out of courtesy to the host, the knife would be removed from its hidden place and placed in the kilt hose, where the host could see it.
Ornamentation on the sgian dubh was traditionally a sign of wealth, since the Highlanders liked to carry most of their wealth on their person.
These beautiful sgian-dubhs are available with wood resin or horn handles, and mounts of silver, pewter or electroplate. All have stainless steel blades.
