The legend of the Scottish Thistle or 'guardian of Scotland' is that the thorny plant saved the Scots from attack by Viking raiders when a surprise night attack was foiled as a raider stood on the plant and cried out in pain. The Scots army were alerted, and the raiders were defeated.
