Canadian Maple Leaf and Scottish Thistle Celtic Wedding Ring
Our Customers came to the shop to discuss an idea that involved designing a ring that was a blend of their cultures; Canadian and Scottish. This was also important because, we were making the same design for their Daughter and Son. They Loved our Thistle Flow Celtic Ring, therefore, we used this design as inspiration for the idea.
The brief was simple, they wanted to create a wedding ring that celebrated her Canadian heritage and his Scottish heritage, a beautiful blend of their very distinct cultures. The Maple leaf is a symbol of Canada, and the Thistle is a symbol of Scotland. The flowing Celtic Knot is the symbol of life and eternity, so this added a narrative to the design, bringing all the elements together.
They both preferred a wider ring, therefore I suggested 7 mm wide with a comfy inside fit. The inside fit tends to be a great shape for most people. We offer it as a standard inside fit now, it has a level of comfort that the straight inside fit does not have. It is also easier to take on and off, particularly when the finger is swollen. We feel it is the best fit for our designs overall.
We started to create the artwork for our customers. building the maple leaf was fairly straightforward. It was important not to make it too similar to the Canadian flag and anything else out there. After a quick look online, we started the design process with sketch book drawings, developing variations of maple leaf shapes. Once the solid version was created, we spent time defining the shape and ensuring the edges were not too sharp. The engraved detail inside added texture to the maple leaf. Our Scottish thistle heads were taken from our original thistle flow designs, the only change we made was making them bigger to accommodate a 7 mm width band.
The band was created with our signature Edinburgh Celtic knot, our knot is inspired by the flow of waves. We added the Scottish Thistles at the sides and the Maple leafs at the top and bottom of the ring. Making a wider band allowed space for larger motifs, which highlighted the most important elements of the ring.
We made two rings in 9ct yellow gold and another two rings in silver, the silver rings were made for our customers Daughter and Son. It was such a beautiful sentiment for the entire family to wear the same design.
Our customers loved their bespoke rings and we really enjoyed the process of designing and making them. The design is a celebration of their cultures, life journey and their family.
